Why Choose Invisalign® Clear Braces?
In the past, if you were an adult or mature teen with mild to moderate dental alignment or spacing concerns, metal braces were the only available method of correcting these issues. When Invisalign was first introduced, it was typically used for minor cases of dental misalignment. Since then, Invisalign has been proven to correct moderate orthodontic issues and even some more serious cases. These clear braces straighten teeth in a more aesthetically pleasing way than metal braces because they are discreet and can be removed when necessary.
What Orthodontic Problems Can Invisalign® Correct?
Overcrowded & Misaligned Teeth – When there are too many teeth for either arch to support, or when some teeth are growing at an angle, pushing the adjacent teeth together.
Large Gaps in Teeth – This sometimes occurs when teeth are missing and have caused surrounding teeth to shift out of place.
Crossbite – When the two rows of teeth don't meet correctly, uneven wear can lead to gum disease, worn down teeth, and bone loss.
Overbite – This condition is common and is evident when the upper teeth protrude further than the lower teeth, or upper teeth are positioned in front of the lower teeth when the mouth is closed.
Underbite – The opposite of an overbite, in this case, the lower teeth protrude further than, or completely cover, the upper teeth.
How Do Invisalign Clear Braces Work?
Invisalign clear braces offer a virtually undetectable alternative to metal braces. Invisalign® aligners consist of a series of graduated, custom-made trays that are replaced every two weeks with the next tray in the series.
A detailed impression of your teeth is obtained and sent to the Invisalign lab for fabrication of the trays. These aligners are made to fit comfortably while gently straightening your teeth. You will need to wear the aligners for at least 22 hours a day. For convenience, they can be removed while eating and when you brush and floss your teeth.
Advantages of Invisalign Aligners vs. Traditional Braces
While traditional braces are not removable and require sometimes lengthy visits to the orthodontist for adjustments, Invisalign trays are premade with adjustments integrated into the system itself. This means less time at a dental office but does require more discipline from the patient to be consistent about wearing them every day for the full 22 hours.
While Invisalign clear braces can often do the job of metal braces, and are excellent for mature teens and adults, they are not the best option for children. This is because they are usually not capable of the discipline necessary to comply with the mandate of wearing the trays all day.
